Sweet mother of god. This is such a brilliantly executed piece of motion and sound design, I just had to share it. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything that has some turntable prowess in it. Check out their site for the credits and production stills.

BRB

Ok it’s Friday, it’s been a long-ass week so let me begin by saying, I can play guitar. I took lessons, and while I haven’t retained enough knowledge to fill 16 bars, I can play when there’s a gun to my head, or a beautiful woman in the room in need of some serenading. So, by default I’m not one of those button-mashing, guitar hero cop-outs that brag about completing DragonForce’s “Through the fire and the flames” on expert with a bored look on their faces, and duct tape holding their thumbs against their palms(there is a reason that song is so freakin’ hard). I think the people that really need an applause, are kids like this, and like this (as well as their supportive parents). Those are the kids that deserve a million views on YouTube. Just like the original Fab Four, practicing real instruments gives you the skills to apply to other mediums, other compositions, and the discipline to excel in other areas of your life. But I digress…

Shutter Island (Exploring Fear part 1)

Shutter Island has been on my “holy shit I need to read that book” list for about a year now. It was written in 2003 by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote “Mystic River”, and “Gone, baby, gone” and has now (much like Mystic River) has been turned in to a delightfully sinister movie. The best part is that it’s directed by Martin Scorsese.

I don’t know what it is exactly, but there is something I really like about mid-century assylums & sanitoriums. Especially ones that deal in the supernatural and the criminally insane. I think it’s just a carnal need I have inside me to have the living shit scared out of me in a controlled setting. Video games like “The Suffering”, the Silent Hill series, and to some degree the Fatal Frame franchise, are all great titles that can give you a real scare with some great interactions. I have always loved the approach of “show less, scare more”, even in films. The scariest movies I can remember were the ones where you barely get to see the bad guy until somewhere in the 4th reel.

Anyway, if the trailer is any indication, this movie should be mind-blowingly awesome and “bring a spare change of pants” scary.

I think this is going to be the first of a series where I explore how we can use fear to design experiences for an audience. There are almost infinite type of personal and public fears. I hope to cover such topics as war, advertising, marketing, film, games, and the human mind. Think it’s a good idea? Fire me a comment.

New 3D work

2 Comments | This entry was posted on May 28 2009

I have been working on getting my 3D skills up to par. Taking an Advanced 3D course has added to my skill set, but with my freakin’ hectic schedule, I haven’t had much time to really explore all the things I want to do with it. I feel like as soon as this final is done, I can fully explore all the techniques I learned.

Well, here is a still frame from the project I am working on.
It’s a 12 second logo animation for The Stickypod Connection & it’s going really well.

More updates as events warrant.
